Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire begins with a flashback. Fifty years before, the Riddle family is murdered in their home. Though suspected, groundskeeper Frank Bryce is found innocent. Back to present day, an elderly Bryce sees a light on at the old Riddle house and investigates. While there he eavesdrops as a misshapen Lord Voldemort, and his servant, Wormtail (also known as Peter Pettigrew) are plotting to kill Harry Potter. Voldemort sees Bryce and murders him. As this happens, Harry wakes in pain, his scar is burning, Voldemort can’t be far.

The Death Mark

Before school begins, Harry attends a Quidditch tournament with the Weasleys. Joined by Hermione, they all use a portkey to get to the campground where they will be staying.

After the tournament, a crowd of masked Voldemort supporters called Deatheaters, patrol the campground, terrorizing muggles. Harry, Ron, Hermione and others retreat to the woods to hide. As they wait for the riot to end, someone fires the death mark, a sign of Voldemort, into the air.

A New School Year Begins

After someone breaks into “Mad Eye” Moody’s home, Mr. Weasley rushes off to the Ministry of Magic and the teens head back to school. At the first day feasts, the students learn there will be no Quidditch that year. Instead, Hogwarts will play host to the tri-wizard tournament, a match between three wizards from different schools. The students also learn the new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher is Alastory “Mad Eye” Moody.

At the end of October, representative students from two other European schools of magic, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, arrive at Hogwarts. Only 17-year-old students are eligible. Even so, the Goblet of Fire spits out Harry Potter’s name to compete, along with the athletic Cedric Diggory, on behalf of Hogwarts. Though no one is pleased, the Goblet’s decision is final. Also competing are Fleur Delacour, a half Veela from Beauxhabtons, and Viktor Krum, a professional Quidditch player from Durmstrang.

The First Task

The first task of the tri-wizard tournament involves dragons. Harry inadvertently learns of this while on a walk with Hagrid. As he mulls this over alone in the Gryffindor common room, Sirius Black’s head appears in the fireplace. He warns Harry to beware of Karkaroff, Durmstrang’s headmaster who was once a Deatheater. He also reassures Harry by telling him Mad Eye Moody is a powerful ally and will offer protection.

To be fair, Harry tells Cedric Diggory about the dragon task. Professor Moody overhears and hints Harry use his broomstick to get past the dragon. Harry takes his advice and captures the golden egg, winning the task.

The Yule Ball

In honor of their visiting guests, Hogwarts hosts a formal Yule Ball. Harry asks his crush, Cho Chang, to go with him, but she accepted Cedric Diggory’s offer instead. Ron and Harry take the Patil twins, while Hermione surprises everyone by attending the Ball with Viktor Klum.

The Second Task

Because Harry told Cedric about the first task, he returns the favor by helping Harry figure out the second task, which entails breathing underwater. Harry’s not sure how to manage this. Fortunately, his good friend Dobby the house elf offers him some gillyweed, which will help him breathe under water. Harry wins the task after finding Ron, Hermione and Fleur’s sister in the water.

The Third Task

The third and final task involves the competitors battling obstacles and finding their way out of a maze. Harry and Cedric Diggory team up to win the tournament for Hogwarts. The trophy turns out to be a portkey, and the teens teleport to a graveyard where Wormtail kills Cedric and ties up Harry. He then reveals what’s left of Lord Voldemort, places Voldemort in a cauldron, cuts Harry’s arm and mixes the blood with Voldemort’s father’s ashes and his own blood. Voldemort rises from the cauldron and assumes his original form.

Harry and Voldemort duel. Just as Voldemort issues the deadly “Avada Kedavra” curse, Harry uses the disarmament curse. The curses somehow connect and Harry receives protection from Voldemort’s past victims. He grabs Cedric’s lifeless body and escapes through the portkey, back to the tournament. Voldemort lives.

Mad Eye Moody

Harry learns the wizard he thought was Alastor “Mad Eye” Moody is actually an escaped Deatheater, Barty Crouch. Professor Snape issues a truth serum and learns Crouch is the one who put Harry’s name in the Goblet of Fire, in order for him to win and grab the portkey to the graveyard.

Another Connection with Voldemort

While telling Dumbledore of his ordeal, Harry learns he and Voldemort have wands containing a feather from the same phoenix.

Though Dumbledore believes him no one else will accept that Voldemort is alive and coming back into power.
