One Million Harry Potter Books For Charity

June 20, 2007 | Filed Under Harry Potter, Deathly Hallows, Charity

Buy BookchildrenI think it’s safe to say that the Harry Potter books bring out the children in all of us. But the fact is that billions of children are not only illiterate but also living in sub-human conditions around the world.

We think that the massive popularity of the Harry Potter books can be put to good use to combat this state of affairs and encourage literacy at the same time.

For each Harry Potter Book that is sold through this website, we will donate a total of $1 to the Global Literacy Project, a charity that focuses on the needs of children around the world by encouraging literacy as a tool to break the cycle of poverty.

The Global Literacy Project develops community-based literacy initiatives throughout the world primarily through the creation of libraries and library support programs in rural schools and community centers in Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean. The organization was cofounded by two Rutgers University professors Olubayi Olubayi and Denniston Bonadie.

This program to raise money for charity is being run by Performancing, a highly-esteemed company that you can trust to distribute 100% of the proceeds from this program to the respective charities. All monies raised will either be donated to charity or used for advertising and promotion (which are critical components for getting the word out).

Our goal is to donate one million dollars by selling one million Harry Potter books by the end of 2007. With the upcoming release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and the tens of millions of copies that will be sold, plus all the copies of previous versions people will be buying to catch-up, we think we can do it… with your help!

[…] This is a great idea. I don’t usually go in for charity and I think that Harry Potter is overrated, but I’m all for teaching people to read.I am a great believer in the power of the written word to improve lives, its not a fast or easy process in societal terms but if you teach one generation to read, and encourage them to do so, and they in turn will teach their children to read and so on down the generations. Literacy is a gateway to freedom, the easiest way to keep people oppressed is to keep them ignorant, its alot harder to do that if they can read. […]

Pathetic. They’ll definitely get more than $1 from each book sold through their link. You can spare more than that, can’t you?
